In spite of the rain, 3.000 fans came to the Salzburg Fanzone (SN, APA)
….mainly Turkish and German fans stayed put in front of the two
giant screens, dancing away in the pouring rain.
Shortly before 8 pm as the heavens started to turn menacingly dark,
Euro co-ordinator Wolfgang Weiss, himself, dragged a crate of raincoats
over and started distibuting them personally to the visitors in the
fanzone. The group playing, “The Floyd Council”, wouldn’t let the
thunder-storm chase them off stage and to the joy of the adamant
football fans, they carried on playing their Pink Floyd songbook.

On the 30th May the “The Floyd Council” performed at the Rockhouse
in Salzburg. Some of the last tribute band concerts I went to see, were
“The Machine” in Stuttgart and Ulm in 2005. After that I decided not
to invest so much time and money into tribute bands anymore. How
pleasant it is, that there is now a resident Pink Floyd tribute band in
Austria. With most of the Floyd Council originating from Salzburg,
they were playing right on my doorstep, so to speak.
In March I interviewed Horst Fischer, singer and guitarist with the
band. Shortly before the show began, I met up with Maximilian
Baumgartner, a long time Pink Floyd fan and winner of the
free ticket. The Floyd Council were playing only for the third time, and
would you believe it, they all sold out. The Rockhouse, with 450 sold tickets,
was full up to the brim! And I must admit that I was impressed and surprised
by the quality of the band.
During the first part of the evening “Dark Side of the Moon” was played.
Something that no tribute band can get round doing. The second part included
“Pigs on the Wing, Fat Old Sun, Arnold Layne and Wots..uh the Deal”, all songs
which are not usually covered by tribute bands. I was positively surprised by the
rock version of “Learning to Fly”.”Shine on you crazy Diamond” was another
titel I thoroughly enjoyed. Also included, and with other songs, were original
inserts from the 94 Division Bell tour, which were projected on to a screen.
Afterwards I was able to speak with guitarists Horst Fischer and Georg Gruber
about the concert. I also met Michael Mayer and Erwin Schuster, two Floyd fans
who had come all the way from lower Austria. Before we could even beginn
exchanging our Pink Floyd knowledge, it was already 2 in the morning.
Time to go.

Can and should one try and copy the music of Pink Floyd ? That’s what many
in the audience had on their minds on the 9th February within the setting of Music-night
at the sold out Bräusaal in Garching before the concert. Round about midnight,
after three encores and two and a half hours, that question had been answered.
A euphoric and bewildered crowd were sent happily on their way home by the
band called “The Floyd Council”. On the Walder stage, the seven musicians and two
female vocalists from the greater Salzburg area, celebrated Pink Floyd with perfect
sound, as if they had been born with this music.
“Money”, “Shine on you crazy Diamond”, “The Wall”, “Wish you were here” –
all hits which the British rock musicians had produced, were played perfectly. But also
songs that not everyone knew. That, by no means, dampend things. Video inserts
which were projected on to a screen, were run during the songs. One of those goose-
pimple moments came, when the girls sang there solo parts accompanied by piano
in the song “Great Gig in the Sky”. Bandleader Horst Fischer who’s birthday it was
on that evening, surprised everybody, by anouncing that his band would be playing
an open air concert in the Euro 2008 fanzone on the 25th June. No doubt an honour
for the band.
There were three winners on that evening, the band, the audience and the organizers
from “luckyman concerts”. The area from which vistors come is getting larger everytime.
Registration-plates from RO, PAN, BGL, TS and MU show the growing popularity
of the “music-night”. The option-card for repeating a concert has been drawn with
mutal agreement on both sides.

On Friday the 1st June “The Floyd Council” played at Salzburg’s Rockhouse.
It was truly a great concert under those old arches. That’s what it must have
been like when Pink Floyd used to play in small clubs. The band was in a
good mood and exept for a few original intros and effects, they played
some interesting interpretations of the songs. Films from the 1994 tour were
running in the background. Starting to think about all the places I’d been
to, to see tribute bands, Stuttgart twice, Ulm, Gersthofen and Liverpool made
the short journey to Salzburg seem certainly worth it!
Comparing this band, exept for their minmal equipment, to international greats
seems quite adequate.
